San Francisco Training Transcripts

SF CoverPage1975, Weeks 1 & 2

1975, Weeks 3 & 4

The IFF DC is pleased to announce the publication of transcripts and recordings from the beginning of Moshe Feldenkrais’s first North American training, held in San Francisco from 1975-77. Begun over 10 years ago this project was interrupted to bring out the 3,000 pages of lessons from Alexander Yanai. As that project has wound down the San Francisco material has been given priority and will be offered in digital as well as book formats. The digital version will have both audio and text enabling a new level of ease in accessing the material. After initial work by Allison Rapp, Dennis Leri is editing the transcripts from his own training. The first four weeks from 1975 are now available.

With only 60 to 65 students this was an intimate training. As Moshe was learning how to work with American students he tended to explain quite a lot about what he was doing. Unique among his trainings, Awareness Through Movement lessons and Functional Integration instruction unfold together. The philosophical and theoretical basis of the method emerges in answers, explanations, stories, Functional Integration explorations and Awareness Through Movement lessons.

As Dennis Leri writes in his introduction:

“The SF training asked the tough questions in new and playful ways and gave us room to convert the questions into our own way of enacting a solution. … Studying with Dr. Feldenkrais was same for everyone, that is to say, it was unique. So will it be for you as you go through this San Francisco training. “

The 348 page spiral bound transcript is $125 + $10 shipping, and available now.

The digital version consists of both text and audio on a data DVD. 348 pages in text files plus almost 40 hours of audio for $200. Both hard copy and digital version together are priced at $250.

Amherst 1980 Week One and Week Two

Amherst Cover pageThe IFF Distribution center announces the release of transcripts of the first two weeks of the Amherst Training from June of 1980. Transcribed and edited with tremendous care by Bonnie Humiston with the assistance of Arlyn Zones, this material represents a rich repository of Feldenkrais’s lessons, concepts and stories. As Arlyn writes in her preface:

“The Amherst Training was the last Practitioner Training that Dr. Feldenkrais conducted during his lifetime. In 1980 his reputation was growing quickly in North America, Europe and Israel. Over 200 people traveled to Amherst, Massachusetts in order to study with him. This was the third practitioner training that Dr. Feldenkrais taught and true to his nature he set about it in a manner completely different from the previous ones. The material found in these pages was to become the basis for the curriculum in many of the Practitioner Trainings that followed.

Beginning with life's first movements of the mouth and breath and following with lessons that mostly follow a developmental progression, one could sense a more global sensation and attention which could take in both the whole and all of its parts. Interwoven throughout this sequence were also lessons which Dr. Feldenkrais said were more structural than developmental.

The lessons in the first weeks are dynamic and inclusive. The ability to use the eyes smoothly is woven into larger movements through space, as is the emphasis on the importance of improving the clarity of orientation in action. Several lessons or series are also devoted to the importance of the teleceptors for improving the quality of self-direction. The connection between the head and pelvis in several different positions or situations is also a central motif. …. These explorations were the conditions that Dr. Feldenkrais provided in order to lead the group down the road toward choice, self-reliance and autonomy.”

Available in spiral bound volumes each containing one week of teaching.

Notice of Increase in Shipping Costs

Shipping & Handling Increase
In May, US Postal Service package shipping rates increased dramatically due to changes in how the rates are calculated. Especially dramatic increases in international shipping result from all packages formerly shipped by boat will now ship via air. Depending on the size and destination we are experiencing up to 50% increase in shipping costs. For instance, the postage for one AY volume to Great Britain increased from $7.50 to $11.00. Even more drastic, on a 30-pound shipment to Great Britain the shipping cost increased from $28.50 to $60. Private carriers are more expensive still.

The IFF DC policy of a flat rate per item for all products means that those who live relatively close to our office pay more than the actual cost of shipping and those living far away pay less. However, we are now faced with unsustainable shipping costs on some international orders which will cost more to ship than the actual product.

The DC board and staff are investigating alternative ideas on production and shipping to bring these costs down or incorporate in the cost of the product. In the short term, however, we will increase shipping and handling costs to $10 per item effective 21 October, 2007.  We will keep you informed as we re-evaluate our policy and encourage your feedback.
