NEW Product From the Archive Volume 3
The IFF DC is pleased to announce it's newest data DVD of the teachings of Dr. Feldenkrais.
This data DVD contains audio recordings of four workshops, geared towards different populations, that Dr. Feldenkrais presented in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada in August 1973. An enormous treasure of teaching, this material comprises almost 45 hours, with 40 Awareness Through Movement Lessons and numerous lectures. A written reminiscence from the organizer of the workshops, Dr. Stanley Brown is included.
Feldenkrais in Vancouver shows Dr. Feldenkrais in top form. In lectures and comments, he gives especially clear presentations of key ideas in the method and emphasizes the excitement of learning as he reflects on his style of teaching. The Awareness Through Movement lessons are leisurely, and because he's not in a hurry he offers many variations and takes some lessons into new territory. There are a few lessons that don't exist in English anywhere else.
The Vancouver material affords the unique opportunity to witness how Dr. Feldenkrais tailored his teaching to different audiences at a time before the San Francisco and Amherst trainings when his efforts were introducing the work to North American students. One workshop was for senior citizens, one for artists, another for people from various backgrounds and the fourth a weekend workshop for general public. Having the different workshops in one volume allows us to see which lessons he chose for each group, how he ordered the variations, and dealt with different rates of learning in the room. You can compare his teaching of similar lessons in different settings.
As our community continues to spread the work, the example of the first Feldenkrais teacher presenting to the public holds many lessons about what we can teach, emphasize and promote.
Quotes from the workshops:
"My teaching is difficult for the teacher. Because [I don't] show you how to do--I don't say which point and some [understand,] some don't there were new variations because some people couldn't follow and I imagine the thing that is necessary to make what? Everyone to learn to become aware of his organic need, to appreciate what is necessary for him to obtain fast, strong, healthy movement."-Dr. Feldenkrais, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada, 1973
"Those who feel old have no room here, can go away. If you feel aged, I don't mind, I am aged myself, but not old. Even if you cover it up with the word 'Senior Citizen' we are not dealing with old people here, aged people yes. An aged person and old must be wiser, therefore can use more intelligence and control and knowledge and achieve things a young person can't do because they're too impetuous and therefore they do everything with brute force, much too much--and ruin their bodies and thats what we do we did before we learned to do it otherwise."-- Dr. Feldenkrais, Edmonds Center, Vancouver, Canada, 1973
"I don't want to teach you tricks I want you to improve your health for tomorrow."-- Dr. Feldenkrais, Edmonds Center, Vancouver, Canada, 1973
